Why develop and maintain a website?

This is a common question that some ask us.

The obvious reason that any company, organization, or individual runs a website is to get the word out!

We are, of course, a local service organization. We work through the church and it's congregation. Is this expense of time and money really needed? Can't parishioners just learn about us through the Sunday bulletin?

Sure they could. And that is the way many Knights councils operate. But society is becoming more and more web-savvy. When a person moves to a new town, many first hit the web to find out more about their city, community, and church. As such, it's important to have a billboard of sorts, to let new parishioners know that we exist and let them see what we are doing to better the church and community. As such, a website is a recruiting tool.

Another reason to have a website is to keep existing parishioners (and members) up to date on our activities. Instead of searching the house to find last Sunday's bulletin, you can simply open a browser and point it to our website. Here you will find all the latest news, check the upcoming events on our calendar, and explore what happened at any past events in our photo archives. Also, our regional and state administration of the organization can also easily see what we've been up to and find our contact information.
Note: We've made the site easy to find with our straightforward URL: http://KofC11234.org

Why provide a full description of the internals of the site?

As you can see from the menu on left, the purpose of this section of the site is not to talk about why the site was created. Instead, it is a full explanation of how the site came to be.

Many might ask: Why would you go through all this effort to chronicle the decisions that were made about the architecture of the site? Why so fully define how the site is designed and maintained?

The reason that I have done this, is that I firmly believe in giving back to the community. That not only means handing out tootsie rolls to raise money for needy children; it not only means that I occasionally spend my Saturday mornings picking up trash from the street we adopted. It's more than that! I also remember the troubles I had when I first decided to create a KofC website. I was not a professional web-developer. I did not know where to start. If it wasn't for Peter Majewski (Council 12119) and a few other friends, I would have ended up dropping the whole idea.
To them, I owe a TON of thanks!      THANKS GUYS!

Thus, I decided to give something back!

I set out to fully explain how the site came to be; the architecture of the site; and all the neat wiz-bang features I built into it. Am I proud of this site? I sure am, and for more reasons than the fact that it won: 1st Place in the KofC NC State website contest in it's first year of existence!
I just hope Pete isn't too upset about only winning 2nd place to an apprentice!     :-)

I'm proud of this site because it's a good site! It's 99.9% original. It uses the latest html/css coding. It has great features that make it easy to maintain. And most of all, it's relevant and useful to our audience! (and not just another boring web-billboard) And now, I'm proud that it's fully documented so that I can one day retire from this post and hand the reigns over to another member without any concerns of the site falling apart and being abandoned.
